BLUE-COLLAR & WHITE-COLLAR

“White-collar” and “blue-collar” are terms that have strong connotations – partly because they bring vivid images to our minds.

What are White-collar jobs?

The general definition of a white-collar worker is someone who works in an office at a desk. The term white-collar worker was first applied to people who did administrative work. However, the term has now gradually been expanded to include anyone in an office environment whose job requires clerical, administrative, or managerial duties. Stereotypically, a white-collar worker’s job description would not include physical labour.

What are Blue-collar jobs?

Blue-collar workers tend to not work in an office. They instead make their living by doing manual or trade-related labour. Besides that, the manual labourers are paid wages based on an hourly basis. Generally, the job description entails physical strains and it is not well paying. Also, blue-collar jobs do not require higher education but the labourers need to be skilled to perform certain tasks. Examples of the job descriptions are manufacturing, mining, construction, repairs and maintenance, and installation of machinery.

Why white and blue colours are used?

White-collar workers are named for the popular white-collared shirts among office workers in the early and mid-20th century. Blue-collar workers are referred to as such because, in the early 20th century, they usually wore sturdy, inexpensive clothing that did not show dirt easily, such as blue denim or cambric shirts.
